The story of Perception takes root in a series of chance meetings, which seem at first glance unlikely, between musicians from differing horizons, be they geographic or esthetic. Jazz Magazine was spot on with an article from the period entitled, “Perception, four conceptions”, before detailing the origins of the musicians (Hungarian for saxophonist Yochk’O Seffer, German for pianist Siegfried Kessler, French for bassist Didier Levallet, Franco-Vietnamese for drummer Jean-My Truong). It then looked at their varying backgrounds (classical academic training for the first two, an improvised apprenticeship on the jazz scene for the third), in order to point out the seemingly contradictory and perhaps complementary directions which would unite in a singular identity. None of this, however, was clear from the start as the group began as a trio with a different saxophonist, before stabilising to the first core quartet.
Having been remarked on in 1970 by Gérard Terronès, who was already producer of the cult Alors! (Michel Portal), Célesphère (Burton Greene) and Basse Barre (Barre Phillips), Perception was thus given a timely opportunity to record their first album on his Futura Records label. This eponymous opus, illustrated with a drawing by Yochk’O Seffer, is the first of a fascinating trilogy. It puts the seal on those complementary contradictions with a lyrically incandescent free jazz, made up of startling interactions between complex harmonies and disjointed rhythms.

L’histoire de Perception s’enracine dans une série de rencontres, a priori pas évidentes, entre des musiciens d’horizons divers, qu’ils soient géographiques ou esthétiques. Jazz Magazine ne s’y est d’ailleurs pas trompé, qui titre à l’époque “Perception, quatre conceptions”, avant de détailler les origines des uns et des autres (hongroise pour le saxophoniste Yochk’O Seffer, allemande pour le pianiste Siegfried Kessler, française pour le bassiste Didier Levallet, franco-vietnamienne pour le batteur Jean-My Truong), puis les parcours opposés (formation académique des deux premiers, fréquentation du milieu du jazz en guise d’apprentissage pour le troisième), histoire de pointer du doigt des lignes de force contradictoires et possiblement complémentaires, en tous cas de celles qui soudent une identité singulière. Pourtant, rien n’était écrit d’avance, puisque ce groupe fut d’abord un trio avec un autre saxophoniste, avant de se stabiliser autour d’un premier noyau dur à quatre. Après avoir été repéré au tout début des années 1970 par Gérard Terronès, alors déjà producteur des cultes Alors ! (Michel Portal), Célesphère (Burton Greene) et Basse Barre (Barre Phillips), Perception se voit opportunément offrir de sortir un premier opus sur son label Futura Records. Éponyme et illustré d’un dessin de Yochk’O Seffer, celui-ci entame une fascinante trilogie encore à venir. Et scelle la complémentarité des contraires en un free jazz au lyrisme incandescent, fait d’interactions fascinantes entre harmonies complexes et rythmiques disjointes.
